The Legendary Roads

Needles Highway

SD 87 ยท Custer State Park

Granite spires, tight tunnels, and the famous Needles Eye.

The Needles Highway runs about 14 miles through Custer State Park, weaving between towering granite spires that look like they were set there just for us.

The road squeezes through narrow one-lane tunnels cut right through the rock. The best known is the Needles Eye Tunnel, named for the thin granite spire above it with a slit through the top, like the eye of a needle.

This is a ride we take slow and steady. There are pullouts for the Cathedral Spires and big views across the southern hills, and the road passes Sylvan Lake, one of the prettiest spots in the park. It is worth every minute.

One stop on a bigger ride. Every tour covers several of these roads, not just one. Your Lead Rider links them together into a full day of riding, picking the best route for the weather, road conditions, and the group.
