If there is one road that captures the Black Hills from the seat of a motorcycle, this is it. Iron Mountain Road winds for about 17 miles through tight curves, hand-built wooden pigtail bridges, and one-lane rock tunnels.
The road was laid out in the 1930s to show off the scenery, not to get anywhere fast, and it still rides that way. Three of the tunnels were lined up so that Mount Rushmore appears perfectly framed at the far end as you ride through.
We take this one at an easy pace. The pigtail bridges loop right back over themselves, the curves come one after another, and the overlooks are worth every stop. It is one of the most unforgettable stretches of pavement in the country.
One stop on a bigger ride. Every tour covers several of these roads, not just one. Your Lead Rider links them together into a full day of riding, picking the best route for the weather, road conditions, and the group.
